The Morning after the Night before…

September 20th, 2009

So I have finally moved in to my halls in Nottingham; its not bad, maybe a bit more basic that I thought considering the photos on the web but I can cope.  Below is a photo of my room, which is fairly bare as my stuff doesn’t arrive for another week due to JB going away to Bangor; apparently it wouldn’t have been fair to make him take a five hour train with three changes whilst carrying all his stuff.

As you can see I have two large windows, unfortunately they are only single glazed, although I do get the sun shining through them in the morning which may keep me a bit warmer.  Its very strange being back in halls again, I get a cleaner and am sharing a washing machine between 30 people which may be interesting, although probably not that different to first year undergraduate.

I’m sharing with four other people although only two of them have arrived at the moment.  My flatmates seem both nice enough and as normal as possible for postgrad students which is cool.  I’m glad I’m not sharing with freshers but at the same time feel that it may have helped me be a bit more daring and knock on other people’s doors etc.

Last night I had a tasty meal of pasta, passata, peppers onions and meatballs.  Unfortunately I don’t possess any oil because I think I have some in a box in the garage, so consequently my peppers didn’t get cooked very well and I really should have heated my passata through for longer.  I spent £33 shopping which wasn’t too much more than expected but I did resist buying anything particularly unhealthy like chocolate or biscuits etc.  I walked to a giant Sainsburys about 20mins away which was jam packed with foreign students buying duvets and a few freshers evidently stocking up with Mum and Dad.

In the evening I went to the postgrad meet and greet in the BGP bar instead of going to the ice hockey, which I don’t regret because we lost!  It was good to meet some people in the same situation as me, I was shocked how many people were doing MA’s rather than MSc’s although most of them were in economics or similar subjects.  There were a couple of PhDs including Chemistry, Stem Cell research and History which kind of made me feel like I should really be doing that instead of the masters but I think that’s probably just wishful thinking really as this year will make me a better scientist and give me a much better shot at a PhD come December.

This morning is bright and Sunny as you can see from the photo below, I think I shall explore the campus a bit this afternoon and hopefully meet up with Chris and Jen at some point.  I hope Karen has a good day as I miss her a lot, she seriously impressed me with all the work she’s got done during the first two weeks of her PGCE and how highly motivated she is to succeed.  I’m really proud of her.
