Deer Stalking…

Last weekend Karen and I went deer stalking at Wollaton Hall.  Unfortunately they were all fairly elusive and mostly confided to the golf course.  We were hoping to see the rut and take photos of the males calling to defend their harems but alas couldn’t get close enough.  I’m not sure who’s idea it was to let the deer have access to the golf course but I don’t think its a good one!  A stag pumped up on testosterone during the rut being hit by a golf ball is probably not going to react passively.  Alas we saw no such events unfold.  However we did have a good walk around the grounds and the house itself, I took a couple of HDRs of the house from the back which I was pleased with.  I think it would be a great place to investigate in the early morning with a tripod to get some cool sunrise shots.  We found a massive tree that amused us for a bit, again I think that it’s got photo potential just needed a bit more thought and I could’ve got something a bit more impressive out of it.

Last Wednesday I took in my first hockey game of the season and successfully photographed it in some pretty crappy conditions.  It was grey and overcast and I was resigned to shooting at at least ISO 2500 to get the shutter speeds I wanted meaning most of my photos were a bit noisey.  I’d really love a faster, longer lens but that is a ridiculous pipe dream for the time being.  I even got given a bit of cash for my shots which was pretty cool.  Fortunately the chap was a photographer who’s camera was broken but he wanted some images of his son, who was captaining the Men’s 1st XI for the first time, and appreciated how tough the conditions were!

Most of my shots were noisey and/or soft and the backgrounds are crap at Highfield!  One end is a car park, the other is trees (not too bad), one side has a building site behind it and the other has the club house as a distraction at one end.  I think I’m going to need to seriously improve my technique if I want to get the best out of the kit I have.  A selection of passable images are in the gallery below.
