Science for Science’s sake (Part I)

I found renewed enthusiasm for my interest in science and my career today after a couple of encouraging hours in the middle of the day. First was our stats lecture which I managed to follow and now I think I understand Bayesian statistics which is encouraging and has given me a new avenue of thought for my own statistical analysis.

Then I went to a discussion group, we looked at a paper reviewing how insect diversity and adaptive radiation is linked to plant diversity and adaptive radiation. Whilst perhaps outside my immediate knowledge it was interesting to be able to debate science! It really made me appreciate the complexity of the subject seeing these high ranking people who have published in the best journals in the world but still have different views and able to express them in a way that I could understand and follow.

I don’t care if science is applied or not, to understand life on Earth we should strive to know every little thing about it, no matter how abstract or “useless” it may appear. And that’s why I love science, its all a jigsaw puzzle and the game is to work out what the pieces are how they fit together.
